The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon in the 80s was what got me into the turtles so the toon line by NECA is one of my favorites. The only problem is they are everyone else’s favorites too, making them hard to come by at retail. With a little patience I do eventually find them. It might be months after all the cool kids get theirs, but I eventually get them without having to feed the scalpers. After not having much luck finding NECA’s Toon Casey Jones and Foot Soldier my expectations weren’t high on my ability to find Slash and Leatherhead either. Well, I was pleasantly surprised when I snagged the last one at my main Target the other day so quick after release. (more…)

Unboxed: NECA Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Rocksteady & Bebop
I never thought I would see the day when I would have an easier time finding NECA’s Rocksteady and Bebop over toilet paper. These are indeed some strange and unprecedented times we are currently living in. The corona virus has been disrupting everyone’s day to day routines so finding a few Rocksteady and Bebops on the shelf was a refreshing sight. Sure, all the boxes were dinged up but I didn’t care. Like most, I have been looking for what felt like forever. I was just glad I could finally get them without feeding the scalpers. For whatever reason, I missed out on the original Rocksteady and Bebop as a kid so it was that much sweeter to finally get these.
As I mentioned earlier, all the boxes had some sort of slight damage, like smashed corners. I know finally finding them in the wild only to have damaged boxes would frustrate some further, but this wasn’t an issue for me. Since I usually always take my figures out of the box, I made sure to grab the one with the most damage.
Like most, I have been juggling working from home and schooling my 4 children at the same time so I am just now getting to play with them. Once you get them out of the box, you’ll get Rocksteady and Bebop who each come with a pistol and rifle looking blaster along with multiple sets of hands for each. The sculpts are screen accurate to the cartoon, and the great paint work really makes the figures come to life. The figures have 13 points of articulation, and once you get the joints moving they give the figure many different poses. These figures seemed to have very stiff joints and it wouldn’t be wise to force them and have them break. As always, if you meet resistance, try a hair dryer or warm water to loosen the joints. The elbows and knees are both double jointed making for a huge range of motion. The mouths also open, which allows for a few different facial expressions which gives them even more personality.
One noticeable frustration with Bebop is the chain wrapped around his wrist. It always slips and takes a few minutes and patience to get back on properly. On Rocksteady, it would be the knife on his back. The way it is loosely on there I can see that breaking with over use. Those minor issues aside this is another solid pair of cartoon figures.
The wait for new wave of cartoon figures wasn’t supposed to be long. But, like everything, the corona virus has caused delays. In the meantime, Rocksteady and Bebop are still restocking to Target shelves. But, if you don’t feel like trying your luck, you can always feed the scalpers on the secondary market.

Unboxed: NECA Bob Ross 8 Inch Clothed Action Figure
It is hard to argue that Bob Ross is a pop culture icon. In a perfect example of “you don’t know what you have until it’s gone”, Bob Ross has become more of a celebrity after his death then when he was alive. As a younger kid, I was introduced to The Joy of Painting on PBS at my grandparent’s house. It was him and Mark Kistler’s Secret City that helped me realize my love for art and drawing. His calm kind demeanor was like watching Mr. Rogers with a paint brush. Unfortunately, after battling Lymphoma Bob Ross passed away in 1995. However, in recent years, there as seemed to be a Bob Ross renaissance. His likeness has been popping up on everything from the obvious paint sets to the odd, but cool, Bob Ross Chia Pet. Even the ever popular Deadpool sometimes cosplays as him. NECA, as always, seemed to read fan’s minds and decided to add a Bob Ross figure to their 8-inch clothed line. After he was revealed, he quickly became the figure I never knew I needed. (more…)
