Lego Announces New Monkie Kid Theme with Playsets & Trailer

Lego announced a new theme, Monkie Kid, based on the centuries-old Chinese legends of The Monkey King and The Journey to the West.  They also released a trailer for the new animated series to go along with it.

“Inspired by the 500-year-old story of the Monkey King, LEGO Monkie Kid is the LEGO Group’s take on a new, untold chapter of the legendary tale. Featuring eight exciting sets, an animated mini movie and TV series, LEGO Monkie Kid is the first ever LEGO theme to be inspired by a Chinese legend and is rooted firmly in the country’s culture and values. The theme’s sets are packed with fun, excitement and an epic story just waiting to unfold…

The tale begins when an ordinary boy, Monkie Kid, finds Monkey King’s legendary staff and he becomes the chosen one. Together with his brave and loyal friends, Monkie Kid begins his quest to stop the Demon Bull King and his army of Bull Clones from taking over the city.

Paying tribute to stories known and admired by so many children and parents in China and Asia, this latest LEGO play theme brings new life to the iconic Monkey King fable and provides a common ground for children, parents and grandparents to build and play together.” (more…)

Unboxed: Playmobil Back to the Future Delorean

I happened to be in Walmart on the first and was lucky enough to find the new Playmobil Back to the Future Delorean. Playmobil revealed their new Back to the Future offerings this past year at NYCC. The Back to the Future franchise is one of my favorites, and I am a firm believer that one can never have too many Deloreans.

Pre-Order Now: Lego Adventures with Mario Starter Course

Could you imagine this quarantine before the internet and online shopping?  Yea, I don’t want to entertain that thought either.  You would think being stuck at home there would be more time to blog but its quite the opposite.  I am still fortunate enough to work full time from home, and I get to help home school 4 children.  One thing the kids have been doing with all their spare time is getting caught up on building some Lego sets that have been in the box way too long.  Lego and Nintendo revealed their new venture a few weeks back and now the new interactive Super Mario set is available for pre-order at lego.com.  Also, as a special thank you for pre-ordering, Lego will give you a Monty Mole & Super Mushroom Expansion Set. Unboxed: NECA Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Rocksteady & Bebop

I never thought I would see the day when I would have an easier time finding NECA’s Rocksteady and Bebop over toilet paper.  These are indeed some strange and unprecedented times we are currently living in.  The corona virus has been disrupting everyone’s day to day routines so finding a few Rocksteady and Bebops on the shelf was a refreshing sight.  Sure, all the boxes were dinged up but I didn’t care.  Like most, I have been looking for what felt like forever.  I was just glad I could finally get them without feeding the scalpers.  For whatever reason, I missed out on the original Rocksteady and Bebop as a kid so it was that much sweeter to finally get these.

As I mentioned earlier, all the boxes had some sort of slight damage, like smashed corners.  I know finally finding them in the wild only to have damaged boxes would frustrate some further, but this wasn’t an issue for me.  Since I usually always take my figures out of the box, I made sure to grab the one with the most damage.

Like most, I have been juggling working from home and schooling my 4 children at the same time so I am just now getting to play with them.  Once you get them out of the box, you’ll get Rocksteady and Bebop who each come with a pistol and rifle looking blaster along with multiple sets of hands for each.  The sculpts are screen accurate to the cartoon, and the great paint work really makes the figures come to life.  The figures have 13 points of articulation, and once you get the joints moving they give the figure many different poses.  These figures seemed to have very stiff joints and it wouldn’t be wise to force them and have them break.  As always, if you meet resistance, try a hair dryer or warm water to loosen the joints.  The elbows and knees are both double jointed making for a huge range of motion.  The mouths also open, which allows for a few different facial expressions which gives them even more personality.

One noticeable frustration with Bebop is the chain wrapped around his wrist.  It always slips and takes a few minutes and patience to get back on properly.  On Rocksteady, it would be the knife on his back.  The way it is loosely on there I can see that breaking with over use.  Those minor issues aside this is another solid pair of cartoon figures.

The wait for new wave of cartoon figures wasn’t supposed to be long. But, like everything, the corona virus has caused delays.  In the meantime, Rocksteady and Bebop are still restocking to Target shelves.  But, if you don’t feel like trying your luck, you can always feed the scalpers on the secondary market.

Unboxed: NECA Splinter, Shredder, & Foot Soldier TMNT Movie Figures

To say the live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie is one of my all-time favorites is an understatement.  By 1990 the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were by far my favorite franchise and I was all about turtles at the time.   I had a TMNT themed birthday party, nothing but turtle Christmas, and the movie was one of the few times I remember seeing my Dad in a movie theatre.  But for whatever reason, I had a ton of cartoon based action figures but never bothered for the live action versions.  Of course, that all changed a couple of years ago when I saw NECA was releasing a line of movie figures.  Until recently, Playmates was the sole maker of TMNT figures.  The only reason I think NECA (and others) got any sliver of the license is that fact that any TMNT figure they release is some sort of store or con exclusive.  NECA always does their best to get things to as many people as possible.  That said, some of these figures are harder to come by than others.  What I have learned is patience is key.
